The visit of the 6th Fleet, which was affiliated with the United States European and African Naval Forces, to Izmir in 1967 is an important event that caused the anti-American attitude of the Turkish public to turn into large-scale actions. However, in the literature, it is seen that this event is not examined with the comparative history method, which allows multidimensional and objective evaluation. In this research, which was carried out in order to fill this gap, the events that took place during the 6th Fleet’s visit to Izmir were analyzed through the documents of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially the documents of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish-American archival documents, local and foreign newspapers and magazines, and the testimonies of witnesses of the period has been described. The documents obtained show that many factors played a role in the violent reaction of the 6th Fleet by the Turkish public. The Johnson Letter and the subsequent prevention of Turkey’s intervention in Cyprus by the 6th Fleet, its role in the 1967 Arab- Israeli War, the attitude of the American government in the strikes of American companies in Turkey, the murder of Ernesto Che Guevara in the same year and the ongoing Vietnam War is one of these factors. This study comes to the fore with its multidimensional and comparative approach to the 1967 Izmir visit of the 6th Fleet, which has not been examined independently in the literature, and points out the reasons behind the violent reaction in the Turkish public opinion.
