Sinemanın ilk zamanlarından itibaren belgesel, tür olarak kabul edilerek gelişimini devam ettirmektedir. Sinemada yeni yaklaşımların oluşması, biçimsel açıdan yaşanan değişiklikler belgeseli de etkilemektedir. Çağdaş belgesel kuramcısı Bill Nichols, bu alanda yaptığı çalışmalar sonrasında belgeseli türlere ayırmıştır. Bunlar; açıklayıcı, açıklayıcı, gözlemci, dönüşlü, edimsel ve katılımcı biçemlerdir. Çalışmada, Nichols’un oluşturduğu belgesel türlerinden biri olan katılımcı biçemin özellikleri dikkate alınarak Dünyanın En Zorlu Hapishaneleri (Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons) programı ayrıntılı şekilde incelenmektedir. Katılımcı belgeselde olaylara katılım sağlanır, röportaj yapılır ve etkileşimin kurulması temel alınır. Toplumsal sorunların incelenmesinin amaçlandığı katılımcı biçemde, sunucu kameranın karşısında yer alarak izleyici ve özneler arasında bağlantı kurulmasını sağlar. Bu bağlamda, Dünyanın En Zorlu Hapishaneleri belgeselinin katılımcı biçemi nasıl ve ne şekilde temsil ettiği, hangi özelliklerini gösterdiği ve başka biçemlerle temas edip etmediği çalışmada ele alınmaktadır.
From the early days of the cinema, documentary has been recognized as a genre and continued its development. The formation of new approaches in the cinema, the formally experienced changes also influence documentary. Contemporary documentary theorist Bill Nichols, after his work in this field, has divided it into documentary genres. These are the forms of explanation, explanation, observation, conversion, action and participation. In the study, taking into account the characteristics of the participating form, one of the documentary species Nichols created, the Inside the World's Toughest Prison (Inside the World's Toughest Prison) is detailed. The participant documentary provides participation in events, interviews are conducted and the establishment of interaction is based. In the participatory form where the study of social problems is intended, the server is situated in front of the camera and allows the connection between the audience and the objects to be established. In this context, it is discussed in the study how and how the participating form of the World's Hardest Prison documentary represents, what characteristics it shows, and whether it is contacted in other forms.

In the study, taking into consideration the characteristics of the participatory mode, which is one of the documentary types created by Nichols Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons program is examined in detail. Participation in the participatory documentary is ensured, interviews are made and interaction is based on. In the participatory mode in which social problems are aimed to be examined, the presenter stands in front of the camera and provides a connection between the audience and the subjects. In this context, how and in what way Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons documentary represents the participatory mode, which features it shows, and whether it contacts with other styles is examined.
