Abstract The article analyses the elements that establish the self-image of Rede Globo’s TV reporters, the largest Brazilian television network. Based on the concept of discursive ethos, we discuss how the self-referential discourse asserts the journalists identity and certain effects of truth about the news reporting. Through discourse analysis of five interviews with Rede Globo’s reporters conducted by the journalist Fátima Bernardes, we propose that the ethos of reporters constructs itself in three dimensions: the attributes of the “good journalist”, the characteristics of the “good reporter” and the specificities of belonging to the O ethos do repórter de TV da Rede Globo Intexto, Porto Alegre, UFRGS, n. 39, p. 60-79, maio/ago. 2017. 79 journalistic field.
