Depending on the awareness of the issue of violence against women, the 34th verse of Surat an-Nisā is interpreted with some traditional or contemporary preconceptions over the phrase "وَاضْرِبُوهُنّ" which means "beat them (women).” Accordingly, while the verse is perceived as a situation against women, it is seen as an advantage for men. On the other hand, in contemporary approaches, the verse is either interpreted historically, or the word in the verse is interpreted in different meanings other than "hit.” However, this phrase is not the only issue of the verse. In this research, the main issues of the verse are emphasized by taking into account the deadlocks of traditional and contemporary presuppositions. In this respect, first of all, the responsibilities of husbands and wives are discussed in the center of the words in the verse. Then, the divine advice for women to violate their duties is examined, and the interpretations of the verse are analyzed by comparison. In addition, the similarity of the issue with the Jewish tafseer tradition is discussed. Thus, it is aimed to reveal an alternative interpretation of the verse. It is emphasized in the verse that the essential thing is creating a peaceful family environment.
