The Qur'an is a unique word in terms of wording and meaning. One of the elements that reveal the miraculous and challenge aspect of the Qur'an, which is the last divine book, is the huruf-i mukatta’as at the beginning of some suras. These letters, which are considered as a discipline in the field of Qur'anic sciences, are syllable letters consisting of fourteen different letters at the beginning of twenty-nine chapters. These letters, which are also expressed as cut letters, have attracted the attention of many commentators since the first periods and various evaluations have been made about them. When we look at the history of tafsir, it is seen that the subject of hurûf-ı mukatta’a has been interpreted by each scholar within the framework of her own disposition and understanding. In this context, like many commentators, Yusuf b. Hilal es-Safedi, in his tafsir Kashf al-asrar ve hatku'l-astâr, focused on this subject extensively and made some determinations that we can call original. Before evaluating the mukattaa letters in Safadi's tafsir he only analyzed the adventure of the letters' first appearance in form, and then evaluated the letters from various aspects such as shape, pronunciation and names. After the explanations about the letters, it is seen that the commentator made versatile explanations for the mukatta’a letters at the beginning of some suras. In this article, we will try to evaluate the interpretations of the tafsir Safedi on hurûf-ı mukatta’a within this framework.
