Rus Edebiyatı’nın önde gelen isimlerinden birisi olan Lev Nikolayeviç Tolstoy, dünya genelindeki birçok yazar, düşünür ve aydın ile hayatın anlamını arama ve anlamsızlıklar içinde derin ruhsal çöküşlere maruz kalma kaderini yaşamıştır. Tolstoy, Anna Karenina’yı tam böyle bir süreçte kaleme almış ve dini hassasiyetlerinin artmaya başladığı dönemde İnsan Ne ile Yaşar? ile bu sorgulamayı tam anlamıyla zirveye taşımıştır. İnsanda ne var? İnsana ne verilmemiştir? İnsan ne ile yaşar? şeklindeki üç soruya cevap arayan bir meleğin dünya üzerinde insanlar ile olan münasebetlerinden yola çıkarak oluşturulan hikâye insana dair mana arayışının en önemli eserlerinden birisi haline gelmiştir. Aynı arayış farklı eserlerde ve farklı biçimlerde devam etmiş ve birçok edebi eserin de merkezinde yer almaya devam etmiştir. Bu şekildeki romanlardan birinin yazarı olan Matt Haig’in İnsanlar adlı eseri de yine bir mana arayışı ve sorgulamanın kitabıdır. Vonnadorya adlı bir alemden dünyaya gelen bir yabancı (uzaylı) insanoğlunun matematik ile ilgili hayati bir formülün nihayete ermesine engel olmaya çalışır. İnsan kılığında dünyaya gelen bu uzaylı, dünyada geçirdiği zaman diliminde kurgusal olarak önemli olaylar yaşarken, aynı zamanda kendisini bir anlam arayışının da içinde bulur. Bu yönüyle de önemli bir neticeye varan bir arayış romanı kurgulanır. Söz konusu çalışma, bu gerçeklikten hareketle İnsanlar’ı bir anlam ve insanlığın özünü sorgulamaları ile ele almış ve Tolstoy’dan yola çıkılarak felsefi ve düşünsel arka planlarını da göz önüne alarak, İnsan Ne ile Yaşar? ile birlikte bir arayış romanı olarak incelenmiştir.

Haig’s The Humans is a book, like Tolstoy’s, about the quest for meaning and questioning the humankind. An alien and his senior management to whom he reports from a universe called Vonnadoria try to prevent humankind from finalizing a vital mathematical formula and solve a problem which is a particular concern for all the humankind. This alien comes to earth disguised as a human being, experiences important fictional events during his time on earth and, at the same time, finds himself in a search for meaning. In this respect, a novel about a quest that reaches an important conclusion is fictionalized. Based on this reality, this study examines The Humans in search of the meaning of life and essence of being a humankind. Moreover, this search is analyzed based upon the story of Tolstoy taking into account the philosophical and intellectual background.
