STEM (Fen, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education is an educational approach in the past few years where intensive studies have been carried out in our country. The work on how this educational approach can be integrated into our country’s educational site, which has not yet been fully conceptualized, continues with the calls of both the country’s leading industrial organizations and the Ministry of National Education. In this study, the researchers studied the effects of a application which also benefits from mathematical modeling to provide an example of how STEM training can be used in mathematical training on the mathematical modeling skills and problem-solving skills of the participants. The study was attended by 22 teachers who graduated from the Faculty of Science and Literature but received pedagogical formation. The results of the analysis showed significant advances in both the mathematical modeling skills and the problem-solving skills of the teacher candidates. The findings have shown that a STEM training that benefits from mathematical modeling can be useful.
Intensive studies have been carried out in the STEM Education approach nationwide and worldwide. Studies on how this pedagogical approach, which has not been fully conceptualized, can be integrated into the educational system of our country, continues with the calls from both the leading industrial organizations of the country and the Ministry of National Education. In this study, the researchers investigated the influence of a modelling activity used with a STEM education perspective, on the mathematical modeling competencies and problem solving skills of the participants in order to provide an example of how STEM education can be used in mathematics education. Twenty-two pre-service teachers participated in the study. As a result of the analyses, significant gains were seen in both mathematical modeling competencies and problem solving skills of prospective teachers compared to the first situation. Findings indicated that the use of a modelling activity with a STEM education perspective has positive consequences in problem solving and modeling skills for use in mathematics teacher education
