Lev Tolstoy’un (1828-1910) büyük destan romanı Savaş ve Barış’ta yaklaşık 200’ü tarihsel, 600’ye yakın karakter yer alır. Bu nehir romanda, Çar’dan, başkomutana, Napolyon’dan sıradan askerlere, dönemin yüksek sosyetesinden sıradan köylüye kadar geniş kapsamlı bir insan yelpazesi yer alır. 19. yüzyılın başındaki Rusya’nın görkemli resmi, Tolstoy'un romanında sadece tarihsel olayların tasvirini değil, aynı zamanda ayrılmaz parçası olarak soyluların (?�?�?�ря?�ст?�?�) da tarihini içerir.
