A doctor performs between 160,000 and 300,000 interviews throughout his lifetime career and makes medical interviews a clinical medicine-applicated procedure. Therefore, communication and empathy are an important clinical skill that is desired and needs to be developed when talking to patients. When it comes to doctor candidates, communication and empathy are a basic clinical skill that can be taught and learned. Our aim in this study is to evaluate the pre-clinical communication and empathy skills of the doctor candidates and to study demographic variables. It is believed that the findings obtained in this sense may be a need analysis in terms of medical education programming. Tools and Methods: This research is in identificative quality, and is completed with 90 students who have formed and accepted to participate in the study in the academic year 2017-2018 with a Foundation University's Faculty of Medicine, located in the center of the province of Ankara. In the collection of data; Personal Information Form, Communication Skills Inventory developed by Ersanlı and Balcı and Empathy Skills Scale B-Form developed by Dökmen was used. Results: 61.1% of students are women, 53.3% are graduates of the Anadolu High School, 93.3% have mostly spent their lives in the province, 70% live with their family at home, 86.7% have a core family structure. The student's total communication skills score is somewhat above the middle level, while the total empathic skills score is below the middle level. It has also been determined that the average score of women’s communication and empathy skills is higher than the average score of men. The result: the ability of doctors to communicate effectively with their patients will help doctors to diagnose earlier and more accurately, reduce the patient’s anxiety and increase their consistency and satisfaction in the process of treatment. At this point, the curriculum of medical education must be in content and quality that will ensure that the corresponding interaction is noticed in the early period in the doctor's candidates.
