Lag screw technique has been used in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery for fixation of the fractured bone segments over 40 years. This approach is considered as a successful technique in stabilization of mandibular, maxillary, condylar, and dentoalveolar fractures, orthognathic and reconstructive surgery. The concept of this technique requires that the compression of the segments is achieved by the passage of the screw through a larger to smaller hole on each side of the fracture. The advantages of the technique include more rigid fixation compared to other fixation techniques, primary bone healing achieved due to segment compression, shorter operation time and reduced material cost. The purpose of this review is to summarize the principles of lag screw technique and its utilization in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.
