Abstract:

The aim of the study is to compare the past and present financial performances of the banking systems of six Turkic Republics, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Turkey, using the COPRAS method, one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making techniques. In the study, a total of 48 commercial banks in the banking system of these countries for the period 2016-2021 are considered. Although the analysis started with six countries, the study continued with banks in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey due to the lack of bank data for Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In the study, 8 financial ratios reflecting profitability (Net Profit/Total Assets and Net Profit/Equity), liquidity (Liquid Assets/Short-Term Liabilities and Liquid Assets/Total Assets), capital structure (Equity/Total Assets and Capital Adequacy Ratio) and income-expense structure (Interest Income/Interest Expense and Cost-Expense Ratio) are included in the framework of the literature and their weights are treated equally. The financial data used are derived from the Bankfocus database, which contains detailed balance sheet and income statement information for both public and private banks, and the authors' calculations. The best and worst financial performance periods of the banks of the country in question are identified and the results are analysed. According to the results of the analysis, it is seen that "CJSC CITIBANK KAZAKHSTAN" bank is in the top two for all years, and "CITIBANK-TR" and "OJSCB BANK OF BAKU" banks are in the top five in the other 5 years except 2016. When the field research was conducted, few studies on the subject were found and it is thought that this study will contribute to the literature on this subject.
