Şehirler, insanların vücuda getirip inşa ettikleri, ibadethanelerden, eğitim, kültür ve sağlık yapılarından, mahallelerden, içinde yaşadıkları konutlardan, çalışma mekânlarından, alış-veriş mekânlarından, bu mekânların ihtiyaç duyduğu ulaşım ve altyapı gibi tesislerden teşekkül eder. Yaşanılan şehir, mahalle, konut veya insanların çevrelerinde vücut bulan her türlü çevresel etmen, insanın bu mekânlarla olan ilişkisini belirlemekte ve inançlarıyla birlikte hayat tarzını şekillendirmektedir. Aynı zamanda kendisinden sonra gelecek olan nesillerinin de hayat tarazlarından inançlarına kadar her türlü sosyal yaşamını etkileyecektir. İslam şehirlerinin belli kıstasları ve özel gereksinimleri ihmal etmeden vücut bulduğu bir hakikattir. Selçuklu kentlerinin bu kurgunun neresinde bulunduğu, batılı anlamda şehir tanımına ve tarifine uyup uymadığı daima tartışıla gelen bir mevzu olmuştur.
