Osmanlı Devleti’nin Gayrimüslim tebaası sahip olduğu haklar doğrultusunda devlet toprakları dâhilinde kendilerine ait eğitim ve öğretim kurumları kurmuşlardır. Sadece gayrimüslimler değil Osmanlı Devleti topraklarında ticaret yapma hakkına sahip olan yabancı devletler de özellikle XIX. asırda devlet dâhilinde birçok mektep açmışlardır. Hem Gayrimüslim tebaa hem de yabancılar tarafından açılan bu mektepler arasında ticaret okulları da bulunmaktadır. Osmanlı Devleti’nin ilk resmi ticaret mektebi Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Âlisi’nin 1883 yılındaki kuruluş tarihi kıstas olarak aldığında ondan önce devlet sınırları dâhilinde açılan ticaret mekteplerinin olduğu görülmektedir. Bunlar arasında ilk olma özelliğini taşıyan ise Heybeliada Rum Ticaret Mektebidir. Bugüne kadar mektep ile ilgili yapılan çalışmalara ek olarak Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet Arşivindeki belgeler de değerlendirilerek hazırlanan bu makalede ilk özel ticaret okulu olan Heybeliada Rum Ticaret Mektebi’nin kuruluşu, verdiği etiğim ve geçirdiği merhaleler üzerinde durulmuştur.
The non-Muslim citizens of the Ottoman Empire established their own educational and training institutions within the territory of the state in accordance with their rights. Not only the non-Muslims but also the foreign states who had the right of trade within the territory of the Ottoman Empire, had established many institutions especially during the 19th century. A number of business schools could be found within these institutions established by both the non-Muslim community and the aforementioned states. When the establishment date in the year of 1883 of the first official trade school of the Ottoman Empire "Hamidiye Trade Mekteb-i Alisi" is set as a benchmark, it is clear that there were pre-existing trade schools opened within the borders of the state before it. Among these business schools, "The Greek Trade School of the People" is considered to be the first one. In addition to the studies that have been undertaken related to the school, by analysing documents of the Ottoman and Republican Archives, this article focuses on the process of the foundation of "The Greek Trade School of the People", the courses offered within the institution and the phases it went through.
