An Integral Approach To Interdisciplinary Research In Education

Özet:

This is a theoretical paper on proposing a way to do interdisciplinary research in education. The main focus of the paper is the integral theory, which was formulated by the American philosopher Ken Wilber. In this paper, I aim to recapitulate Wilber’s framework of Integral Methodological Pluralism (IMP) and discuss how it can be used in educational research to further the aims of interdisciplinary approaches. I will focus on how IMP can be applied to develop a better understanding of education as inquiry in the context of Philosophy for Children (P4C) and similar programs. Despite its international success P4C has come under sustained criticism from myriad positions, from both left and right of the political spectrum. I argue that in order to bolster the claims of P4C that it helps develop both inquiry as well as communication and collaboration skills and provide evidence for its utility in mainstream schooling, a multi-perspective approach to research is necessary. Wilber’s integral approach to reality and research provides a suitable framework to this end. If we would like to do fruitful interdisciplinary research in education, we need to develop an integral frame of mind to tackle the complexities of educational phenomena. There is no doubt the field of educational research stands to benefit immensely from an interdisciplinary approach to research. Such an approach, however, is doomed to failure if it is not conceived in an integral way from the very beginning. An integral approach to research will dramatically enhance our understanding of educational phenomena and inform our own practice of teaching and learning.

It empowers individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to create a sustainable future and tackle global issues such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. In this article, we will explore the importance of sustainable development education, its goals, and the role it plays in shaping responsible global citizens. Description Sustainable development education is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates environmental, social, and economic perspectives into the learning process. It aims to promote a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness between humans and the environment, as well as the impact of our actions on present and future generations. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a framework for sustainable development education, providing a roadmap for creating a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world by 2030. Sustainable development education raises awareness about the pressing global challenges we face, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality. It helps individuals understand the root causes and consequences of these issues, fostering a sense of urgency and a commitment to take action. Sustainable development education encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It equips learners with the ability to analyze complex issues, evaluate information from multiple perspectives, and develop innovative solutions. By nurturing these skills, education empowers individuals to become active agents of change in their communities. Sustainable development is a systems-level approach, recognizing the interdependence of social, economic, and environmental factors. Education helps individuals develop a systems thinking mindset, enabling them to understand the intricate relationships between different components of a problem and identify leverage points for positive change. Sustainable development education emphasizes collaboration and collective action. It fosters a sense of shared responsibility and the importance of working together across diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and cultures to address complex challenges. Education helps students develop skills in communication, teamwork, and negotiation, enabling them to collaborate effectively with others. Sustainable development education promotes the adoption of sustainable lifestyles. It encourages individuals to make conscious choices regarding consumption, waste management, energy use, and transportation. By instilling values of environmental responsibility, education helps create a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who contribute to a sustainable future. Education institutions should integrate sustainable development concepts across various disciplines, ensuring that students encounter sustainability themes in subjects such as science, social sciences, mathematics, and humanities. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to connect knowledge across different domains and understand the broader implications of sustainability. Experiential learning opportunities, such as field trips, outdoor education, and community service projects, provide hands-on experiences for students to apply sustainable development principles in real-world contexts. These experiences deepen understanding, foster a sense of responsibility, and inspire action. Conclusion Sustainable development education is a transformative force that equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values to create a more sustainable and equitable world. By integrating sustainability principles into curricula, fostering critical thinking and collaboration, and promoting sustainable lifestyles, education institutions play a pivotal role in shaping responsible global citizens. It is through sustainable development education that we can inspire the next generation to address the pressing challenges of our time and work towards a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
