The French Ambassador Edouard Antoıne Thouvenel (1818-1866) had been appointed as an ambassador to Istanbul, by Napoleon the 3rd, when he was working as the head of diplomatic branch of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Crimea War (1853-1856). Thouvenel has fiercely competed with the experienced English Ambassador Lord Stratford Canning in order to be effective on Ottoman State’s relations with the other foreign countries. He had acted as an efficient diplomat in Istanbul during 1855-1860 years and also actively took part in the preparation studies of reform edicts. Prior to his appointment at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he published remarkable reports on cultural and historical backgrounds of Hungary, Eflak, Bogdan, and Istanbul. In these reports, he not only explored the traditional structure of the society, but also told the beauty and charm of Istanbul with a historical manner.
