Although the terminological consensus has been recently reached on the concept, “Private Equity” as a financing method designed in Turkish Capital Markets Board Regulations under the name “Venture Capital” in 1993 which has roots to the 1980s. However, the years 2000 had to be waited to observe the practices of this method far later than the legal arrangements. The development of private equity sector in United States and later in Europe started in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Despite Turkey, lacked sustainable practices of private equity mainly due to economic instability and high cost of capital, the situation has changed during the last decade in paralell to globalisation. In this time howewer, we come across regulatory efforts that aim to respond to the needs of the private equity sector. On the other hand, an institutionalization process led by non-governmental organizations and supported by public authorities has been observed based on the generally accepted view that, "private equity" plays a role in the technological and innovational improvement of the small and medium sized enterprises. In the light of the above, in this study, the development of private equity in Turkey was revisited and the rapid development in the recent years was focused. Then, taking into account the practices in private equity sector and existing regulations, the opportunities for a model which will involve the local capital and local share holder is discussed
