Abstract:

This study aims to present a bibliometric review of the postgraduate theses and dissertations published on translation in Turkey from 1985 through 2020 in terms of different parameters. To that end, a search is made in the database of the Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center (https://tez.yok.gov. tr/UlusalTezMerkezi/giris.jsp) using the keyword of Translation with the option of Advanced Search and without any filtering to form the corpus under this study. This search has yielded a total of 814 theses and dissertations, including  656 masters’ degrees, 157 Ph.D. dissertations, and 1 Master of Art thesis, which are all presented in the corpus of this study. These theses and dissertations in the corpus are examined through bibliometric analysis that uses variables such as academic level, year of publication, the language of publication, university, institute, department, supervisor, research design, and data collection methods. As a result, this study discovers that the number of postgraduate theses and dissertations on translation has increased significantly over the years, with the majority of theses and dissertations authored by students at Istanbul University, Marmara University, and Sakarya University, respectively. It is also remarkable that most of these theses and dissertations were published by the institutes of social sciences; furthermore, the number of theses and dissertations governed by the Departments of Turkish Language and Literature is congruent with that of theses and dissertations governed by the Departments of Translation and Interpreting in these institutes. The majority of these theses and dissertations were for master's degrees and were supervised by professors. The research method used in these theses and dissertations was largely translation-oriented text analysis and document analysis as the data-gathering tool, according to this study.
