Abstract:

Marriage is a unionin which couples have legitimate sexuality; in which an economic cooperation is made and in which a child is born and raised legally.The great technological developments experienced with the Industrial Revolution and the changes in the social structure evolving from the traditional to the modern have caused the attitudes towards marriage to change. The generation is a group of people who were born in the same years, lived in the same era conditions and were obliged to do similar chores.In this study, it is aimed to compare romance, spouse selection and marriage attitudes of X and Y generations in order to analyze the changes in attitudes about marriage through time.Data were collected from a total of 636 people, 521 of whom were students, 62 of whom were academic and 53 of whom were administrative staff in Düzce University, usingthe Inonu Marriage Attitude Scale and the Attitudes about Romance and Mate Selection Scale.Although there was no statistically significant difference in marriage attitudes between generations, significant differences were detected in subscales. It was observed that the marriage attitudes showed difference according to marital status, gender, presence of a divorced relative and appropriate age of marriage. In this study, the insignificance to marriage attitudes between generations was caused due to the high levels of education of the participants as well as the marital status of the them; X generation consisting of married people and Y generation consisting of single people.
