Abstract:

Purpose: In this study, the opinions of school principals on institutionalization in private education institutions were examined. Method: Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group was determined by the convenience sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods. The study group was consisted 15 school principals working in private education institutions in the province of Istanbul. The data of the study were obtained through face-to-face interviews and using a semi-structured interview form. The data collected in the research were analyzed by content analysis. Findings: According to the findings, it is seen that the participants define institutionalization as a structure independent of individuals, in which procedures, principles, rules and boundaries are determined. Majority of the participants stated that institutionalization aims at systematic, standardization and sustainability. In addition, the participants stated that there is a certain stance in an institutionalized educational institution, that there is no uncertainty and that development is given importance. In the roadmap determined for institutionalization, the participants; it underlines the setting of goals, the creation of teams and the making of a business plan. While the participants stated that the positive aspects of institutionalization ensure continuity and fulfillment of legal rights, the negative aspects of institutionalization are stated by the participants to create an inflexible and mechanical structure. Participants suggest that educational institutions that want to institutionalize should attach importance to the formation of appropriate teams and receive consultancy services. Originality: When the literature is examined, it is seen that there are many domestic and foreign studies on institutionalization, especially in the field of business. However, the scarcity of studies in the field of education draws attention in studies conducted in the country. In these studies, it can be said that the higher education level of education is emphasized and the studies that deal with the school in general are limited. In this context, it is thought that this study, which addresses the problems related to institutionalization in private education institutions and offers suggestions on this subject, it will contribute to the field in terms of understanding the institutionalization process in schools.
