Abstract:

Hemedan, one of the important cities of the Cibal region, was a center in the Middle Ages with both its geopolitical position and its political and economic characteristics. It has been a city that has productive land and is located on trade roads, on the other hand, one of the important points of the military transition route in the region since the establishment of Hemedan, which has witnessed many historical events. After being captured by the Muslims, the city that continues to evolve has entered the territory by the Selçuklists under the domination of the Turks and has become one of the important cities in the West. Though the rulers of Selçuklu sent the members of the Handedan to govern this area, they took care that the city's administration remained dependent on them. Therefore, they are likely to have gone ahead of events without allowing independent movements that may be centered on Hemedan. It is understood from the sources of the revolution in which a separate possibility was shown to the city of Hemedan, which has taken over an important military and political base in the conquests of the Selçuklu sultan towards the west. This study will be discussed in the light of the knowledge given by the sources of the great Selçuklular period of the city of Hemedan and the events and developments found in this city.

Hamadān, an important city of Jibal region, rose as a centre thanks to its geopolitical location and political and economic qualities during the Medieval period. Already containing fertile soil and being located on trade routes, Hamadān was also a significant crossroad point for military transit routes in the region and had witnessed numerous historical events since its foundation. Maintaining its rise with its capture by Muslims, the city came under the domination of the Turks with the arrival of the Seljuks and became their one of the most important cities in the west. Although the Seljuk rulers sent the dynasty members to govern the region, they also opted to keep the city’s administration solely under their own control. Consequently, they survived potential unwanted incidents by avoiding the possibility of Hamadān-centred independence movements. The sources of this period clearly demonstrate that the Seljuk sultans displayed a special interest for the city of Hamadān which was a significant military and political base for westward Seljuk conquests. This study evaluates the significance of the city of Hamadān during the Seljuk period along with the incidences and developments the city experienced under the light of the data the sources provide.
