Abstract:

Culture is the tradition, custom, architectural structureand way of life that a society s from transfers from generation to generation. Cultural literacy, on the other hand, enable individuals to recognize and own the values and elements that reflect the culture. The aim of this study is to examine cultural literacy aspects within the the 5th, 6th and 7th grade social studies curriculum outcomes and textbooks in terms of cultural literacy. The social studies curriculum, which was updated andput into practice in 2018, was examined in terms of cultural achievenments. After receiving approval from by the ministry of nationa education, the social studies textbooks taught in the 2022-2023 academic year were analyzed in terms of the frequency of including cultural concepts and the distribution of cultural concepts in learning areas. The data were analyzed by content analys is and shown in tables. As a result of the study, it is seen that cultural literacy acquisitions in social studies textbooks are included in the learning areas of individual and society, culture and heritage and global connections,. Notably cultural concepts are mostly at 6th grade level. Culture and heritage elements are at the 5th and 6th grede level; in the 7th grade, it was seen that he took part in the learning area of culture and heritage and global connections. As a result, it has been determind that social studies textbook adequately address the development of gaining cultural literacy, however the types of handicrafts are not sufficiently included in the textbook and suggestions have been developed for improvement.
