Abstract:

The present study investigates the correlation between the immigrant stock and the economic, political, and social globalization index figures. In the study, the annual United Nations Migration Report, International Migration Statistics, International Migration Report, and KOF globalization index data for Turkey between 1990 and 2020 were used. The stationarity of the series was tested through Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) unit root tests. Then, the Johansen cointegration test was applied to determine the presence of a long-term correlation between the index figures, and the Granger causality test was employed to determine the direction of the causality. The study findings demonstrated that there was at least one cointegration vector between globalization and the immigrant stock, and there was a unidirectional causality from social globalization to the immigrant stock. Based on the error correction model, the system shock disappears after 1.39 periods, and the series stabilizes in the long run. According to the impact-response analysis, an increase in the social globalization index value causes an increase in the immigrant stock from the second period.
