Abstract:

Batman’s urbanization process is based on settlements around a secure site. The walls and security measures for the protection of the oil refinery settlement in the 1950s formed one of the first secure sites in the country in that period. After this experience in Batman, secure site samples have been made limited for half a century. But since the beginning of the 2000s, a urbanization has been experienced, especially where the sites built by construction firms with the promise of safety and privileged life are rapidly rising. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the walls, security technologies and monitoring mechanisms that rise around the buildings, private security personnel and new forms of spatial organization, offer the inhabitants different possibilities of living; at the same time, with the boundaries it creates, it separates this section from the other inhabitants of the city. Most of the projects under the name of urban transformation in recent period are also increasing the number of secure sites; with these projects, social separation becomes even more visible. This study analyses the different dimensions of secure site-type housing production, which has grown rapidly in the number in the recent years, especially in the northern direction of the city in Batman, and reflections in the spatial and social context. As a result of the conversations with the people living in two secure sites in the city, this kind of housing has grown largely with security concerns and the spatial separation feeds the social separation.
