Abstract:

Tourism can be defined as activities carried out for the purpose of exploring historical and natural beauties, visiting, resting and having fun without the purpose of settlement. The tourism sector has an important place in the economies of the developing countries, thanks to the employment it creates, the foreign exchange inflows it provides and its ability to encourage investments, as well as its share in reducing foreign trade deficits. With this study, it is aimed to evaluate the impact of the tourism revenues on the Turkey’s economic growth. In the econometric analysis phase of the study covering 1980-2020, an econometric model was created using Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and tourism revenues to represent tourism. In the model created, the relationship between tourism revenues and GDP was examined with the help of ARDL cointegration analysis. As a result, according to the ARDL model, which was made to measure the validity of the hypothesis that tourism revenues affect economic growth, as stated in the theoretical part of the study, it was determined that tourism revenues affected economic growth in the long term stable and significantly and there was a long-term cointegration relationship between the variables. According to the results obtained from the error correction model, it is seen that the short and long term are integrated.It will be an important element in the sustainable growth process that Turkey grows its hidden power in tourism and in this context, diversifying its tourism revenues and turning to increasing policies.
