Abstract:

In the Hollywood movies, the mother’s performances have been stuck in certain patterns, especially in the films Stella Dallas (1939), A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Kramer vs Kramer (1979) . The Hollywood cinema eternalizes patriarchal myths and it is possible to title the mother representations of Western culture under four general categories: good mother, bad mother, heroic mother and weak mother. In the study, the Florida Project, Lady Bird, Three Bilboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and Tully mother characters, taken in 2017 and 2018, were also selected as sample because they were also positioned as the main characters. The selected films will be analyzed by the question of whether they exceed the categories in which the mother’s representations are stuck in Hollywood films, whether they look at the mother’s characters as substantial female individuals or not.
