Abstract:

The aim of this study is in the scope of Turkish lesson developing a valid and reliable measurement tool to measure ellipsis processing skills at 5-8th grade level in secondary school. For this purpose 306 students which are at 5-8th grade level in the 2021-2022 academic year were included in the study. A draft measurement tool consisting of 28 multiple-choice items and two parts was prepared by taking an equal number of items to reflect the classification as subject, object, predicate, noun clause elements, adjective clause elements, indirect object ellipsis, additional ellipsis to be applied to the students. This draft measurement tool was used in the actual application after the expert opinion was taken and the preliminary application was conducted. In line with the answers given by the students, item difficulty and discrimination values based on the 27% lower-upper group method were calculated. As a result of the item analysis, 7 items were excluded from the measurement tool. The averages of 27% lower and upper groups of the items were compared with the independent sampling t-test. In addition, the factor structure of the measurement tool was confirmed by Second-order Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The mean item difficulty value obtained from the final form of the measurement tool was 0.55, and the item discrimination index was calculated as 0.44. The KR-20 reliability coefficient obtained in terms of internal consistency of the measurement tool is 0.75. Considering these values, it was decided that the measurement tool is a valid and reliable tool that can measure ellipsis processing skills at the secondary school level.
