Abstract:

This study is the first research in literature which investigated the relationships between motorcycle rider behaviors, personality characteristics and risk perception. The participants were 201 male participants who have motorcycle license. The age range of the participants was between 17 and 58 years. In the current study, Basic Personality Traits Inventory, Risk Perception Scale and Motorcycle Rider Behavior Questionnaire were used. According to the results of the hierarchical regression analysis, speed violation was positively related with neuroticism and negative valance, and negatively related to risk perception. While there was a positive relationship between extraversion and motor control errors, results showed that agreeableness and neuroticism dimensions were negatively related with motor control errors. . It was found that there was a negative relationship between responsibility and risk perception and stunts. There was a positive correlation between negative valence and traffic errors. The results highlight that risk perception is related with motorcycle rider behaviors even when it is examined with personality traits. Considering possible differences between personality traits in line with the findings, it is aimed to develop different methods for driver's license trainings and make a positive contribution to road safety.
