Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Instagram addictions and the social appearance anxiety of high school students. Besides, in this study it is examined whether their Instagram addictions differ according to the variables of gender, grade level, high school type, monthly family income, mother’s education level, father’s education level, having a dislike of face/body parts, time spent daily on Instagram, the frequency of the use of Instagram photo editing apps. The data were analysed through correlational survey model. In the 2019-2020 academic year, 712 students at four different high school types in the district of Kartal in Istanbul, constituted the sample of the research. In addition to an “Instagram Addiction Scale” and a “Social Appearance Anxiety Scale” as data collection tools, a “Personal Information Form” was utilised to obtain demographic information. Since the number of data was over 30, Kolmogorov-Simirnov test was used to test for normality of distribution. As a result of the findings, a positive, moderately significant relationship was found between Instagram addiction and social appearance anxiety of students studying at high school level. In other words, as students' Instagram addiction increases, their social appearance anxiety also increases. It is hoped that the research results will contribute to the literature on Instagram addiction, and the findings will help guide future research.
