Yaratılışında mizah yeteneği olan insan, bu özelliği hikâye ve anlatılarında ortaya koymaktadır. Düşünce ve inancın dile getirilmesi, karşı çıkılan din ve dünya tasavvurlarının olumsuz yönlerini göstermesi noktasında menkıbe ve mizahi hikâyeler önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Özellikle kişilerin kendi mezhep anlayışlarının aktarımı noktasında hikâye ve menkıbeler, tarihsel süreçte fikirlerin ve inançların sürekliliklerini sağlamak için en önemli malzemeyi oluşturmuştur. Tarihteki önemli şahsiyetlerin yaşadığı olaylar, hikâye formatında aktarılmış, zamanla yeni hikâyeler ve menkıbeler ile mezhebî aidiyetler yeniden inşâ edilmiştir. Bu bağlamda tarihi bir şahsiyet olan Behlûl Dânâ, Müslüman toplumların hafızasında latife ve hikâyeleri ile meşhur olmuş bir karakterdir. Ancak onun şakalarında ve hikâyelerinde görülen eleştiri, Şiîlik ile itham edilmesine sebep olmuştur. Onun Şiîliği hakkında ileri sürülen bazı rivayetlerin incelenmesi ve mezhebi kimliğini açığa çıkarılması, İslam düşüncesinde sosyo-politik eleştiri ve muhalefet geleneğinin anlaşılması noktasında önemlidir.

Parables and humorous stories take an important place in terms of expressing thoughts and beliefs, and of showing the negative aspects of imaginations of religion and world, which are objected to. Especially in relation to people's transmitting their own religious school's understanding, stories and parables constitute the most important material in order to maintain continuity of ideas and beliefs in the historical process. The events experienced by remarkable figures in history are transmitted in story form, and belongingness to religious schools has been reconstructed through new stories and parables in time. In this sense, Bahlūl Dānā, who is a historical character, is a person who became famous in the memory of Muslims with his jokes and stories. However, the criticism observed in his jokes caused him to be alleged as a member of Shi'a. It is important to analyze some rumors suggested about his being a Shi'ite and to reveal his identity of religious school in terms of understanding socio-political criticism and opposition tradition in Islamic thought.
