Abstract:

The room, which has an important place in the formation of the Anatolian house built with traditional methods, called the Turkish House or the Ottoman House constitutes the repeating basic unit around the sofa. However, the room, which is interpreted as a reflection of the tent culture carried from Central Asia to Anatolia, has the characteristics of a house that meets the basic requirements. Although the structures in Anatolia differ in many ways, it is seen that the foundation principle of the room setup has not changed despite the regional differences. This simple, pragmatist, modular approach bearing the traces of nomadic life extends from the tent to the townhouse room and even to the mansion and palace rooms. In this process, rural houses did not receive enough attention in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the spatial setup and equipment components of the rooms of traditional houses located in Çavuş Village of Hüyük District of Konya, which is a local example of a room in an Anatolian rural house. In the research, firstly, the settlement texture of the study area was examined and the houses specific to the region were analyzed. As a result of the building condition analysis of Forty-six houses, four unique examples were documented and identified with surveys and photographs. As a research method, first of all, the settlement pattern in the study area was examined and the residences, specific to the region were analyzed. In addition to the fixed accessories such as “yüklük”, “çiçeklik”, “gusulhane”, fireplace, “sergen”, cupboard/niche that make up the fixed equipment of the Turkish room, there is a seating area with felt series on the bench on the floor of the room, which has not been encountered before in the literature. A wooden horizontal element called “mesnet” in the region, which divides it into two groups, has been identified. It has been determined that the “mesnet” serves seating areas and is used in different functions. Çavuş houses have regional characteristic values in terms of materials, construction techniques, plan typology (outer sofa plan type, partially open inner sofa plan type and inner sofa plan type), ornamentation elements and interior organization, while contributing to the terms of folk architecture with definitions such as “sala, mesnet, çardak” in local terminology. With reference to the “mesnet” element in this study, it can be said that the Traditional Turkish room has an interior space tradition enriched with regional differences. It is important in the context of cultural continuity to document these structures, which show the plain examples of the elements that express the rural manifestation of the Traditional Turkish Room and shape the room, and to bring the interior organization and fixed equipment into the Anatolian folk building art inventory.
