Abstract:

Segregation, social polarization and social exclusion resulting from spatial inequality are among the central concepts in today’s urban debates. The aim of this article is to examine how the socio-economic characteristics of the population at the neighborhood scale shape the space and how this creates a segregation in the urban space alternately. Informal residential areas and gated communities today include different spatial organization features. These contextual distinctions are important in understanding the production of urban inequalities. What is the nature of segregation patterns? How can similar social or economic divisions create different spatial patterns within the city, and how does similar spatial discrimination marginalize different degrees of social division? In order to answer these questions, qualitative methods were used in the research and semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 interviewers, and the data were processed with content analysis. It has been observed that the socio-spatial structure existing in Yalı and Cumhuriyet neighborhoods in Karşıyaka District of İzmir, which consists of people with very different structures in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, deepens the segregation at the neighborhood level.
