Abstract:

The banking sector directly affects many stakeholders, especially depositors, and therefore a large part of the society. Therefore, the negativities experienced may affect these segments closely. In this respect, the efficiency of the banks' corporate governance practices is very important. Based on the importance of this issue, in this study it is aimed to reveal the effect of being involved in corporate governance on the performance of banks in terms of the banking sector. Accordingly, for the 2010: Q1-2020: Q3 period, a total of 13 banks, 4 of which are included in the BIST Corporate Index, have been included in the analysis. Whether being included in the BIST Corporate Governance Index has a significant effect on banks' return on assets and return on equity has been examined by panel data analysis. The results showed that the inclusion of banks in the corporate governance index does not affect their performance.
