Temeli resim sanatına dayanan matte paintig, sinema sanatının en önemli araçlarından biridir. Matte painting olarak ifade edilen bu teknik, başta sinema, fotoğraf, grafik, reklam, mimari gibi alanlarda usta sanatçıların ellerinde sanatın büyülü dünyasına, hayallerin ötesinde bir görüntü zenginliği kazandırmaktadır. Matte painting tarihi süreci içerisinde sinema sanatından daha önce varlığını göstermiştir. Belirli bir zaman diliminde fotoğraf sanatının içerisinde şekillenen teknik, fotoğraf sanatı öncülüğünde gelişen, sinema sanatına uyarlanmış ve asıl değerini sinema sanatının ihtiyaçlarını karşılamada göstermiştir.Sinemanın ortaya çıkması ile beraber hayallerin görselleştirilmesi mümkün kılınmıştır. Bu hayallerin geçtiği mekânların kayıt altına alınması belli sorunları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu sorunların en başında çekilmek istenen görüntünün yaşadığımız dünyada olmaması ya da var olan mekanları görüntülemenin hem maddi hem de teknik olarak çok zor olması sinema yaratıcısını belirli arayışlara sevk etmiş ve bu arayışlar neticesinde geçmiş deneyimlerin ışığında matte paintig tekniğinin sinema sanatına uyarlanmasıyla sektör içerisinde olmazsa olmaz sinema tekinlerinden biri haline gelmiştir. Teknik zaman içerisinde gelişen teknoloji ile beraber evrimleşerek önemini bugüne kadar artırarak gelmiştir.Matte painting fotoğraf ve sinema sanatına katmış olduğu büyük katkıların yanında var olan birçok alana da katkı sunmaktadır. Bugün geldiğimiz noktada teknolojinin getirmiş olduğu olanaklar neticesinde fotoğraf, sinema, mimari, reklam vs. Birçok alanda varlığını önemini koruyarak ihtiyaç hissedilen tüm alanlara hizmet etmektedir.
