Abstract:

The aim of this study is to study the relationship between the frequency of internet use in university students, problematic internet use and sociodemographic characteristics, general psychiatric symptoms and social anxiety disorder. Tools and Methods: The universe of this research, which is of a cutting-edge type, is formed by students studying at Yalova University in the 2014-2015 academic year. The method of random sampling was used in the selection of sampling. Students who accept to participate in the study were asked to fill with the data form sociodemography k, the Signal Scanning Test (SCL-90), the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale and the Problematic Internet Use Scale. 510 students participated in the study. 50.7% of the students who participated in the study were women and 49.3% were men. The work group was formed by classes 1, 2, 3 and 4. 34,5% of students said they used the internet between 2-4 hours a day, 28.4% between 4-6 hours, 18.8% 6 hours or more. The student’s problem-based internet use score is 68.25 ±23.718. and Min. 1 of 161, max. The LBW Social Fobia Symptoms Scale, the SCL-90 Total Scale and their lower scales have been determined in a positive direction (p<0.05). The highest correlation ratio was 0.452 in the SCL-psychotic subscale, 0.440 in the SCL total score, 0.441 in the LBW total score, 0.437 in the LBW avoidance score, 0.425 in the SCL-fobide, 0.414 in the LBW anxiety score, 0.408 in the SCL-anxiety, 0.403 in the SCL-depression. The result: The score from the problematic scale of internet use and the frequency of internet use and the meaningful relationship between the class, the financial status of the students and who they live with.
