Abstract:

Body sociology has become one of the core fields of sociology with the influence of post-physical thinkers after World War II. Especially since the second half of the 20th century, effective studies have been shown with the development of health sociology. This study is based on Foucault’s bio-power and bio-politics concepts and Turner’s theory of body sociology. The focus of this study is how the statements of the regulatory power affect the female body and the population at the macro level. The technological developments that this century has brought and neoliberal political speech demonstrate itself very effectively in medicine, especially in the female body. The research model of this study carries the nature of the story research. In this study, 10 women who were diagnosed with a risk pregnancy were interviewed and the participants were asked to tell the life stories they lived during pregnancy. In the light of the data obtained from the discussions, four topics have been determined and these topics are classified by tube-based content analysis. These topics consist of four different topics: the order and normalizing effect of medical speech (1), the unity of women and the psychological process (2), the control of the body and social practices (3) and the social/work life of women (4). The study found that domination on their bodies, especially through bio-power and bio-politics, was disappointedly accepted by women. The concepts of risk and uncertainty that cause anxiety in pregnant women in the study also form normalizing practices of medical speech. In this sense, the expert opinion, the international companies performing genetic tests, laboratory examinations, psychological processes, hospitals have come to the forefront in working as very important forces in the diagnosis of riskful pregnancy.
