Abstract:

Using the texts in their original form in groups where the language level is beginner or intermediate may negatively affect the self-confidence of the student and discourage the student's enthusiasm for learning that language. In this context, it may be useful to organize the texts according to the language levels of the students instead of using them as they are. Students who read adapted texts can enjoy the aesthetic pleasure of that language. The student who discovers the aesthetics in the language likes that language more, so the enthusiasm for learning increases. In order to transfer these functions of the language to second language learners, the need to simplify literary works and adapt them to student levels has arisen. In this sense, making the simplification closest to the original text and preserving the message that the text wants to give will both enable the student to understand the text better and improve the aesthetic taste of the language. The subject of the research is the simplification of Sabahattin Ali's story "Hasan Boğuldu", within the framework of coherence and cohesion, which are among the textlinguistic criteria within the framework of the European Common Paper for A2 level students learning Turkish as a foreign language. The aim of this study is to contribute to the simplification of literary works and the need for text in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language. The study was conducted to support the development of reading comprehension skills for learners of Turkish as a foreign language. In addition, it is aimed to be used at the point of eliminating the lack of resources in the area. The application of the study was implemented in two classrooms at the A2 level, an language center in Istanbul. The simplified text was read in the classroom and the original text was read in another classroom, and the differences between the two classes were determined. Students were first asked to fill in the first part of the application consisting of demographic questions. With these questions, it was aimed to determine the student profile and to determine whether there is a relationship between profiles and text comprehension studies. Before the text is read, a brief information about the text was given, and it was requested to answer the preparatory questions consisting of matching the visuals of the text with the words. In the last part, the application was completed by reading the text and asking the text questions to be answered. The application measures whether the simplification is successful or not, and its effect on students' reading comprehension skills. The obtained data were analyzed using Spss 25 statistical program. According to the findings, it was determined that the achievement score of the experimental group in which the adapted text was read was higher than that of the control group in which the original text was read.
