Abstract:

13th and 14th centuries witnessed important developments related to Turkish history of trade. In this period intensive commercial relations were established between Turcoman maritime begliks of Western Anatolia and Italian city states which played an important role in the Mediterraean trade in accordance with the provisions determined by the agreements. Not only the commercial agreements between Venice, Aydin and Menteshe, but also the notes or letters of Italian merchants that served as a trade handbook shed light on this commercial relations. Thus, the common idea among the historians that the Turks didn’t have any ideas on trade and they filled up their treasures with booty and pillaging raids will have lost its significance in the light of the above mentioned documents. In this article, in which the grain that had an important role in trade between the Turks and Italians during the 13th and the 14th centuries is considered, how the grain trade was organized will be shown in details.
