Abstract:

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar was one of the most prominent men of letters who made a mark on Turkish poetry of the Republican era. Furthermore he produced many literary works as a narrator, novelist, essayist and researcher of Turkish literature. He wrote his poems –except the latest ones- in syllabic verses and he succeeded in this style. The poet of Bursa’da Zaman (Time in Bursa) presented many well-written and picturesque poems by giving importance to form and poetic language. He never sacrificed his poems to any kind of political opinions or ideological views. He tried to find the beauty in the poem itself. With this mentality he was after pure poetry and he approached the same pursuit of Ahmet Haşim by this manner. He had been under the influence of Ahmet Haşim since his childhood. So this influence created sentimentalism in his soul. Tanpınar expresses the thoughts and emotions that he hasn’t been able to utter in his poems by writing novels. As in his poems, there are picturesque descriptions in his novels. Especially Huzur is an example for this kind. The protagonist of the novel Mümtaz represents Ahmet Hamdi himself. Tanpınar embeds pieces from his life into his poems and novels. But he makes changes on them masterly.
