Abstract:

The word "population" is the plural of the Arabic word "nefs" and means "person". There is no doubt that the population is of great importance in the knowledge of demographic, economic and military life of a settlement. People, who are the most important figures of society, have always been curious about their past and have gone to the way of learning in various ways to satisfy this curiosity. In this regard, people tried to learn where their lineage came from, what professions their grandparents were engaged in and what kind of family structure they had. On this occasion, population records are important sources that provide access to this information and similar insights. These records, which began to be kept starting from the year of 1830, were kept in Enegi as they were kept in every Ottoman city, and Muslim and non-Muslim citizens were registered separately; these records provided various data regarding the people who lived in Enegi. This study includes numerical statistics of the jizya tax, which non-Muslim citizens had to pay the empire as well as providing information on the households, nicknames, typologies and ages of Muslim and non-Muslim citizens living in Nevsehir Subprovince attached to Enegi (Kaymaklı) Village based on population records. Finally, considering the taxes collected in Enegi, it can be said that the non-Muslims of Enegil paid more commercial taxes than the Muslims, and in this context, the non-Muslims who had at least one family member in Istanbul played an important role in the unification of the Ottoman countryside and the Ottoman urban culture.
