Abstract:

Although he became a Muslim not long before the Prophet Muhammad’s death, Jarīr ibn Abdullah al Bajalī, who was known not only for his appearance but also for his good moral character, was a faithful and exemplary companion of the Prophet. He was honoured by the Prophet’s praise for these characteristics, and he made significant contributions to the Islamic community in religious, political, and military terms. He began to serve the State by destroying Dhul Khalasa, which was one of the most important temples of the pagans. He joined the fight against the apostates, and, by bringing the Bajīla tribe together, supported the Islamic army in the wars against the Sassanians. During the Rashidun caliphate, he successfully fulfilled the military and administrative tasks assigned to him. One of the most important characteristics of Jarīr ibn Abdullah is the fact that he never remained insensitive to the issues that arose among Muslims; he, through warnings and advice, invited people to act in accordance with the laws of the religion. Muslims respected him in this regard and heeded his warnings as they knew that the Prophet had assigned him this mission. This study addresses Jarīr ibn Abdullah’s military and political activities in the Muslim community during the period starting with his commissioning by Caliph Abu Bakr for the conquests in Iraq until his death.
