Öz 19. yüzyıl, dünyada “Doğu Sorunu” olgusunun ortaya çıktığı ve şekillendiği bir yüzyıl olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Bu sorunun somutlaşmasının köklerine indiğimizde sömürgeciliğin bir uzantısı olarak ortaya çıkan Oryantalizmin, bir felsefi düşünüşten bilimsel ve entelektüel bir uğraş alanına yöneliminin olduğunu söylemek mümkündür. Bir paradoks olarak bu düşünüş biçiminin ve bu yöndeki etkinliklerin modern dünyanın birçok bilim disiplininin doğuşunda ve gelişmesinde ironik bir biçimde payı olduğunu söylemek yanlış değildir. Sömürgeciliğin emperyalizm çağına evirildiği 19. Yüzyılda oryantalist faaliyetler aynı zamanda politikanın da bir aracına dönüşmüştür. Oryantalizm dönemin büyük güçlerinin dünyanın pek çok bilinen- bilinmeyen yerlerinde coğrafya, tarih, etnoloji, antropoloji, haritacılık, arkeoloji vb. alanlarda inceleme ve araştırmalarla kendini göstermiş ve bu süreç aynı zamanda “Doğu Sorunu” olgusunun da hazırlayıcısı olmuştur. Bu açıdan Rusya İmparatorluğu’nun özellikle Osmanlı İmparatorluğu topraklarında yürüttüğü Oryantalist çalışmalar Osmanlı İmparatorluğu topraklarının ve özellikle Anadolu coğrafyasının haritalandırılması, demografik yapısı, etnik niteliği, sosyo-ekonomik yapısı ve antik dönem tarihine ilişkin ilk araştırmalarla “Doğu Sorunu”nun biçimlenmesinde en az diğer Avrupa devletlerinin oryantalist faaliyetleri kadar etkili olmuştur.
