Medyanın gerek genel gerekse yerel seçim süreçlerinde, siyasal aktörler ve seçmenler açısından önemli bir yerinin olduğu bilinen bir gerçektir. Bu durum, seçim süreçlerinde medyanın önemini ve etkisini ele alan araştırmaların artmasına neden olmuştur. Buna karşılık literatürde Mısır’da gerçekleşen genel seçimlerin basında nasıl temsil edildiğini inceleyen çalışmaların oldukça az olduğu görülmüştür. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada, Mısır'da 2011 yılında gerçekleşen genel seçimlerin basında nasıl temsil edildiği hem muhalif hem de iktidara yakın olarak nitelendirilebilecek medya kuruluşları üzerinden analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında ele alınan 2011 genel seçimleri, Mısır'da önemli siyasi değişikliklere sebep olması nedeniyle ayrı bir önem arz etmektedir. Nitekim 2011 Genel Seçimleri 30 yıl süren Mübarek rejiminin ve iktidardaki Ulusal Parti’nin çöküşünden ve halk devriminden sonra gerçekleşen ilk seçimdir. Tüm bunlardan hareketle bu çalışmada, El Shorouk ve Al Ahram gazetelerinin 28 Ekim - 28 Kasım 2011 tarihleri arasındaki genel seçimleri içeren haberleri niceliksel içerik analizi uygulanarak, belirli kategoriler üzerinden analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan analizler, her iki gazetenin de devrim öncesi dönemde iktidarda olan Mübarek ve partisine karşı olumsuz bir yaklaşım içinde olduğunu göstermiştir. Al Ahram ve El Shorouk gazetelerinin bir diğer ortak noktası, Ulusal Demokrat Parti ve bu partiden ayrılan tüm üyelere karşı eleştiri içeren haberler yayınlamalarıdır. Buna karşın Al Ahram gazetesi, İslami akımlara ilişkin olumsuz yaklaşım sergilerken; El Shorouk gazetesi ise İslami akımın temsilcilerinden ve siyasette yer alan Müslüman Kardeşlere ilişkin olumlu yaklaşımla haberlerini yayınlamıştır.
It is a well-known fact that the media has an important place in local election processes, in terms of political actors and voters. This has led to an increase in research on the importance and influence of the media in the election process. In contrast, literature has found that there are quite a few studies on how the general elections in Egypt were represented in the press. Therefore, this study analyzed how the 2011 general elections in Egypt were represented in the press through media organizations that can be qualified as close to opposition and power. The 2011 general elections, discussed in the context of the study, are of particular importance because they have caused significant political changes in Egypt. In fact, the 2011 general elections are the first elections that take place after the fall of the Mubarak regime and the National Party in power, which lasted 30 years, and the people's revolution. With all of this in this study, the news containing the general elections of the El Shorouk and Al Ahram newspapers from 28 October to 28 November 2011 was analyzed through specific categories, by applying quantitative content analysis. The analysis has shown that both newspapers are in a negative attitude to the Mubarak and his party, who were in power in the pre-revolution period. Another common point for al-Ahram and al-Shorouk newspapers is the publication of newspapers that include criticism against the National Democratic Party and all members who have left the party. Nevertheless, the Al-Ahram newspaper showed a negative approach to Islamic streams, while the Al-Shorouk newspaper has published its news with a positive approach to representatives of the Islamic streams and Muslim Brothers in politics.
