Abstract:

The demand for learning Turkish is increasing day by day, and Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centers of the universities in Turkey, Turcology departments of the universities outside Turkey and Yunus Emre Institutes have been working to meet this demand. The main purpose of the courses given in these institutions is to develop the reading, listening, speaking and writing skills of learners but the opportunities of those who learn Turkish in Turkey and those who learn Turkish outside Turkey are not the same. Therefore, it becomes highly important to determine how different variables could affect the development of the learners' language skills and their self-efficacy. The aim of this study was to analyze the self-efficacy in speaking skill of those who learn Turkish as a foreign/second language. In the scope of the study, it was examined whether the self-efficacy in speaking skill of the learners differed according to their gender, their age, their experience of learning Turkish in Turkey or abroad, the institutions where they learned Turkish, and their language level. The results of the research indicated that there was no significant difference among the self-efficacy levels in speaking skill of the learners according to their gender and their age. It was also found out that the self-efficacy average scores in speaking skill of those who learned Turkish abroad was higher than those in Turkey, that the self-efficacy average scores in speaking skill of those who learned Turkish in Gaziantep was lower than those in Kazakhstan and Algeria, and that the self-efficacy average scores in speaking skill of the learners with Turkish language level C1 was higher than those with B1 and B2 levels.
