Abstract:

Abstract:

Kocaeli Sanjak was composed of the districts of Iznikmid (Izmit), Kandira, Sile, Gegivize (Gebze), Yoros, Iznik, Yalak-Abad (Yalova) and Island (Adapazari) in the 16th century. The administrative borders of Kocaeli Sanjak included the present provinces of Kocaeli, Sakarya and Yalova, and Üsküdar, Kartal, Beykoz and Chile, located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. Kocaeli had an advantageous geopolitical location throughout the history in terms of land transportation, sea ports and sea transportation, as it is at the crossroads connecting Istanbul and Anatolia overland. In addition, the existence of large forest areas where trees suitable for shipbuilding were abundant was another factor that made this geography valuable. Kocaeli's geography is one of the fields that cradled the Ottoman state in its establishment. The first Ottoman madrasas, mosques, imarats and zawiyas established in the cities here were the institutions that formed the Ottoman religious, legal and social thought. The mentioned institutions made Kocaeli Sanjak unique for the foundation of the Ottoman state. In this article, the names of the institutions where religious services such as mosques, masjids, madrasahs, teachers' houses, imarats and zawiyas in the cities, towns and villages of Kocaeli Sanjak have been identified. Based on the examination of these institutions in the tahrir records and the religious elements in the names of people and places, the study analyzes the religious life in the sanjak. In addition, it also deals with the places, their founders and the services performed at these institutions, which are important for the Turkish educational history.
