Abstract:

In the early times of the process following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a power gap and uncertainty were formed throughout the Caucasus. The Russian Federation, in this environment, has seen the former power and prestige of the Soviet Union as a legacy and has tried to play an active role in this region. In Georgia, which is one of the strategic countries in the region, the influence of Russia has also been seen in ethnic matters. The subterranean resources in the region have also been one of the major triggers of this desire. The separatist ethnic conflicts, in the Ossetia and Abkhazia regions, have been the main cause of instability in the region. This article will discuss the role of Russia in the conflict and instability environment. Of course, this examination will be carried out taking into account the prospects of Russia, Georgia and the people of the region separately. The current situation will also be assessed from a historical perspective.
