İslam düşüncesinin son parlak yüzü olarak görülen İbn Haldun, görüşlerini açıklarken sosyal bilimlerin çağdaş metotlarına oldukça yaklaşmıştr. Geçim ve zenginliğin elde edilmesi ve bu ikisinin insan ve toplum hayat üzerine olan etkileri İbn Haldun düşüncesinde önemli bir yer teşkil etmektedir. Ona göre, yaratlı- şı gereği insan, toplu halde yaşamak zorundadır. Bu da iş bölümünü ve çeşitli meslekleri ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Geçim ve zenginliği elde etmek için seçilen meslek, insan ve toplum hayatnı şekillendirmede belirleyici bir rol oynamaktadır. Bu düşünceden hareketle İbn Haldun, geçim ve servet ile ahlak arasında ayrılmaz bir ilişki kurmaktadır.
