KOCASIZ YAŞAM: YOZGAT’TA BOŞANMIŞ KADINLARIN DENEYİMLERİ

Abstract:

Abstract:

As the fact of marriage and family institution exists in a society, the fact of divorce also shows its existence in the same society. Therefore, one of the social aspects that sociologists cannot ignore is the fact of divorce. The priority of the study is how divorced women in Yozgat face the economic, social and cultural difficulties they encounter after divorce and how they follow these ways. The study has studied the challenges that divorced women have experienced at the socio-economic level and in the social gender context. In this direction, a meeting was held with Yozgat and 30 divorced women living around. The socio-demographic characteristics of divorced women have been assessed and the impact of divorce on their post-divorced lives has been observed. Our main objective in this study is to understand how the women who end their marriage by divorce, economically, live their lives in Yozgat as a divorced woman. The main argument of the study is that divorced women in Yozgat cannot find a way except to live with their families/family-dependent as a solution after divorce due to the economic difficulties arising from the unsufficient or unacceptable food and gender-based business division after divorce and re-marriage. These women, without relying on the support of their families or their former spouses, cannot build autonomous houses, they cannot live the life they want on their own feet. Our claim in this study is that these women are experiencing economic difficulties due to their economic dependence and lack of food during their marriage period. These women also face difficulties in the labour market because they are responsible for child care as a single parent. They are also having difficulty strengthening themselves economically.

Abstract:

Just as marriage and family institution, divorce is a phenomenon that exists in a society. Thus, it is one of the social matters that sociologists should never ignore. The primary aim of this study is to find out how divorced women in Yozgat deal with post-divorce economic and socio-cultural challenges and the methods they adopt to this end. This study investigates the challenges faced by divorced women both at a socio-economic level and in terms of gender. In this regard, 30 divorced women living in Yozgat and its vicinity were interviewed. The socio-demographic qualities of those women were evaluated and the effects of divorce on women's lives thereafter were underlined. Our main goal in this study is to understand how women, whose marriages were ended through divorce, experience life as a divorce woman in Yozgat in terms of economy. The main argument of this study is that divorced women in Yozgat cannot find a way except living with their family/being family-dependent after divorce due to insufficient alimony/child support or not being awarded one at all as well as economic troubles arising due to gender division of labor. Those women can neither establish an autonomous household without their ex-husband's or family's support nor live as they like on their own feet. In this study, we argue that those women face economic challenges due to their economic dependence during marriage and due to insufficient alimony/child support. They also experience hardship in labor market since they, as single parents, are also responsible for childcare. Thus, they have difficulty in empowering themselves economically.
