Abstract:

As compared to other language skills, reading skill is very important, especially in academic sense; students who are learning Turkish as a foreign language think that reading skill is the most important skill in the target language. In this context, it will be appropriate for students to be aware of the factors that influence the reading process and to be informed about keeping their reading process in control. The use and utility of audiovisual tools in language teaching is a known phenomenon. At the beginning of these tools are films. Studies have shown that using movies in language teaching is also effective in the development of speaking skills like other language skills for foreign language learners. While there are many studies about the use of films in teaching foreign language in the field scanning, it is seen that there are very few studies in our country and it is not enough. It demonstrates the importance of this study. The use of films in foreign language teaching or Turkish teaching for foreigners cannot be seen as a simple phenomenon in the way of watching movies in class or watching students alone. Supporting watching film activities should be created by the teacher in order to achieve in this subject. Watching a movie without supporting activities can result in failure. However, when using the right method with the right film, films will be an effective and fun way to improve the speaking skills of the students. At this point, foreign language teachers have important tasks. The most important task of the teacher is to provide a good learning environment for the students to improve their speaking skills. In this study, improving reading skills of Turkish learners to foreigners through films was examined and the examples of activities related to the development of reading skills through films that teachers can use in Turkish lesson were offered.
