Abstract:

Subdialects are variations in a language. Every subdialect differs from each other by big or small differences. These differences can appear in phonetic, morphologic, syntax or semantic level. As variations in subdialects progress and differences come into focus, dialects are being formed. Today’s dialect studies, generally phonetic or morphologic differences are presented. Dialect maps are constituted from this point of view. However, one of the most important subjects needed to study is semantic differences but it is much harder to present semantic differences than phonetic or morphologic ones. First of all, detailed lexical studies on Anatolian dialects are required. On the other hand, dialect dictionaries are not a dictionary which can be prepared desk bound like written languages. Researchers are supposed to go to field and compile deepening vocabulary. However, vocabulary compilations without method, generally don’t give the intended results. Therefore dialect lexicography requires very different studying strategies than written language dictionaries. In this paper, it is tried to think over dialect lexicography. Especially, it is focused on the problems that are faced before or during the compilation and how to solve them. This article doesn’t claim to express and solve all the dialect lexicography problems, on the contrary it is aimed to contribute to the researchers who think over and put into words with articles on this issue. Dialect lexicography techniques are the subject that is necessary to be studied all by itself. It is perceived deficiency of a guidebook on this case. We believe that this guidebook can be brought into existence as dialect researchers getting together with contributions over the case.
