Abstract:

The monumental structures are structures that reflect the society, the accumulation of knowledge, the construction materials, the construction methods and, most importantly, the cultural values. With its original values and essences, these structures must be preserved today, and transmitted to future generations so that future generations can reach and contribute to the accumulation of knowledge. In this study, suggestions and assessments are presented for re-functioning the character of Bolu Upper Taşhan with a function that can lead to the forefront. One of the methods that can be preferred in the preservation of the monumental structures is to resuscitate the structure with re-functioning. When re-functioning is given, many criteria, such as the physical state of the structure, the position, the conformity with the function to be given, and the function that is best suitable for the structure should be chosen. If the function is selected uncompatible with the structure, the identity of the monumental structure may disappear and may remain insufficient in the transfer of the values it hosts. In the framework of the study, the Bolu Upper Taşhan structure has been evaluated by its physical and cultural values and re-functioned by geographical signs. The upper Taşhan structure located in Bolu is an architectural character and a concrete document that keeps light to the past with its traces. The upper Taşhan, which has been able to preserve its original status in the form, has taken over a function where the commercial spaces are located. Books, pockets, jewelry and so on. The structure in which the products are offered for sale creates a similar perception to the small-scale trading centers built to date, and its characteristic features remain back-planed. The study was conducted as a method of literature scan, plan schemes and photographs were studied. With the research and research done, the conclusion was achieved that the existing function of Bolu Upper Taşhan cannot reflect the architectural identity and that it should be properly re-functioned and a new function proposal to feed the structure was presented.
